Transform Islamic Education: Train to Teach Qur’an, Arabic, and Islamic Studies with Excellence

Madrasahs and supplementary schools play a big part in many children’s lives, often for several hours every week. The people who teach in them are usually chosen for their subject knowledge and their commitment, and they deserve the same quality of professional training as any other teacher. Raedan Institute is not a faith-based organisation. This course is professional teacher training, delivered by Academica Mentoring for people who teach Qur’an, Arabic and Islamic studies, in the same way that our other courses serve teachers of English or Maths.

Yet most Madrasah teachers receive minimal training. They’re selected for their knowledge of subject matter but given little pedagogical support. They teach as they were taught—often using methods developed centuries ago, ill-suited for 21st-century students raised in Western contexts with different learning needs and expectations.

The result can be lessons that children find hard to follow or to enjoy, and teachers who are working much harder than they need to.

It doesn’t have to be this way.

Academica Mentoring’s Online Madrasah Teacher Training Programme provides comprehensive professional development specifically designed for Islamic educators—whether you’re teaching in formal Madrasah settings, supplementary weekend schools, or supporting your own children’s Islamic education at home.

This programme combines time-tested Islamic pedagogical traditions with cutting-edge educational research, creating culturally authentic, pedagogically excellent Islamic education.

Who Should Enrol?

Madrasah Teachers (Part-Time/Volunteer): You teach Qur’an, Arabic, or Islamic studies in mosque-based Madrasahs, typically evenings or weekends. You’re passionate and committed but lack formal teaching training. This programme equips you with the pedagogical expertise your work deserves.

Full-Time Islamic School Teachers: Teaching in full-time Islamic schools, you need expertise in both mainstream pedagogy (for academic subjects) and specialised Islamic education methods (for Qur’an, Arabic, Islamic studies). This programme provides the latter.

Imams and Islamic Scholars: Your Islamic knowledge is deep, but you struggle to communicate it effectively to students, especially youth and converts. This programme teaches you to translate scholarship into engaging, accessible teaching.

Parents Homeschooling Islamic Education: You’ve chosen to homeschool your children’s secular education and want to provide excellent Islamic education as well. This programme equips you with professional-level teaching skills even without formal teaching background.

Hifz Teachers and Qur’an Instructors: Specialising in Qur’an memorisation or recitation, you need specific techniques for effective tajwid teaching, memorisation support, and retention strategies. This programme provides exactly that.

Islamic Community Centre Educators: Running youth programmes, converts’ classes, adult Islamic studies, or family education, you need engaging, effective teaching methods suitable for diverse audiences. This programme delivers.

Online Islamic Educators: Teaching Qur’an, Arabic, or Islamic studies via Zoom, Microsoft Teams, or dedicated platforms, you face unique pedagogical challenges. This programme addresses online teaching specifically.

Why Madrasah Teachers Need Professional Training — The Unique Challenges:

Islamic education in Western contexts faces distinct challenges:

Student Motivation: Unlike Muslim-majority countries where Islamic education is culturally normalised, Western Muslim students often see Madrasah as additional burden after full school days. Engaging them requires exceptional teaching.

Cultural Disconnection: Many students are second, third, or fourth-generation Muslims with limited heritage language skills and cultural knowledge. Teaching must bridge this gap.

Competing Priorities: Students juggle mainstream schooling, extracurriculars, social media, and peer pressure. Islamic education must compete for attention and demonstrate relevance.

Diverse Backgrounds: Classes include students from multiple ethnic backgrounds, Islamic traditions (Sunni/Shia, different madhabs), socioeconomic levels, and family religiosity. Differentiation is essential.

Time Constraints: Most Madrasahs operate just 2-4 hours weekly. Achieving meaningful outcomes requires incredibly efficient, effective teaching.

Teacher Volunteers: Many Madrasah teachers are untrained volunteers giving their time generously but lacking pedagogical skills. Support and development are crucial.

Facility Limitations: Teaching often happens in makeshift classrooms with limited resources. Creative pedagogy compensates for material constraints.

Traditional training addressed none of these realities. This programme does.
